Dubrovnik rewards the traveler who resists checklist speed. On our 2018 trip, staying inside the Old City walls let us step into quiet lanes early, retreat when the day-trippers arrived and return when the stone began to glow. The three days below are flexible modules, not a rigid sequence.
At a glance
The flexible three-day route
History first, an island reset second, then a beach-to-skyline finish.
The editorial rule
Don’t just see Dubrovnik. Time Dubrovnik.
Staying inside the walls changes the trip: you can use the calm first and last hours, then spend the busiest middle stretch at lunch, on Lokrum or at the beach.
- 01
Check the official cruise-arrivals schedule for your exact dates; published calls can change.
- 02
Protect the walls for opening time or later light, outside the largest arrival window.
- 03
Book only the anchors—Piknik, Panorama and any guide—then keep the rest movable around heat, ships and weather.

The complete itinerary
Day by day
Keep the three themes, then move them around weather, swimming conditions and cruise calls.
History inside the walls
Old City → City Walls → Fort Lovrijenac
Begin with a local guide so the lanes, churches and civic buildings read as a living republic rather than a beautiful film set. Walk the walls only when the light and crowd pattern are working for you.
Local-guide walk
Our local guide gave the Old City its essential context. Start around the Stradun, then connect Sponza Palace, Orlando’s Column and St. Blaise Church before the lanes fill.
Open in Google Maps ↗Rector’s Palace + Old Port
Continue through the political heart of the former republic to the harbor. The compact route makes it easy to pause rather than race.
Open in Google Maps ↗Franciscan Monastery & Museum
Pair the cloister and museum with the nearby Serbian Orthodox Church and St. Ignatius Church as time and interest allow.
Open in Google Maps ↗City Walls
Walk early or later in the day, outside the heaviest cruise-arrival window. Exposure is real: carry water and expect stairs with little shade.
Open in Google Maps ↗Fort Lovrijenac + Pile Bay
Finish beyond Pile Gate for the fortress perspective and the small bay below. Confirm same-day ticket or pass conditions before entering.
Open in Google Maps ↗Island reset + cliffside sunset
Old Port → Lokrum → Buža I or Buža II
Leave the stone lanes for Lokrum’s trees, swimming rocks and slower rhythm. Bring a Piknik Dubrovnik pack, then return inside the walls for a simple cliffside sunset.
Piknik Dubrovnik pickup
Order ahead and confirm the current Old Town meeting point. The official spelling is Piknik; their reusable pack was part of the pleasure, not just lunch.
Open in Google Maps ↗Official Lokrum ferry
The official boat leaves from the Old City Port and its ticket includes reserve admission and return transport. Schedules change by season and weather, so check the official timetable for your exact date.
Open in Google Maps ↗Lokrum at your own pace
Choose a shaded picnic spot, monastery grounds and one swim area rather than trying to circle every path. Keep wildlife wild and carry the pack back as instructed.
Open in Google Maps ↗Buža I or Buža II
Use whichever cliff bar best fits the evening and has space. Treat it as a sunset perch, not a guaranteed seat; sea conditions and seasonal operations can change.

Banje or Lapad → Mount Srđ → Panorama
Make the beach choice around energy: Banje for proximity and the Old City view, or Lapad for a broader neighborhood change. Save Mount Srđ for late light and a final panorama.
Banje or Lapad
Choose one. Banje is the easy Old City pairing; Lapad earns the transfer when you want a longer seaside reset away from the walls.
Open in Google Maps ↗Mount Srđ cable car
Check live operating status before leaving the beach. Hours vary seasonally and service can pause for wind, lightning or heavy rain.
Open in Google Maps ↗Panorama sunset
The view is the point and sunset tables are sought after. Reserve directly with Panorama and coordinate the booking with the cable-car timetable and weather.

After doing the trip
What we would repeat—and protect
- Stay inside the walls for the quiet edges of the day
- Begin with a local guide for historical context
- Take Piknik Dubrovnik to Lokrum
- Eat at Azur twice if the current experience still earns it
- Finish one day above the city at sunset
- Check ship calls before fixing the day order
- Move the City Walls to early or later light
- Use Lokrum or the beach during the busiest middle hours
- Keep Mount Srđ weather-flexible
- Leave room for unplanned lanes and harbor pauses
Three days in Dubrovnik
Don’t just see Dubrovnik. Time Dubrovnik.
The enduring memory is not how many landmarks fit into three days. It is the feeling of the city when you catch it between arrivals: morning stone, an island picnic, a late swim and the red roofs turning soft below Mount Srđ.
